Introduction

R (http://www.r-project.org/) is a Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) - a well organized and sophisticated package - that facilitates data analysis, modeling, inferential testing, and forecasting. It is a user-friendly software that allows creating new function commands to solve statistical problems. It runs on a variety of UNIX platforms (and similar systems such as LINUX), Windows and Mac OS X.

R is one of the most preferred open-source languages for analytics and data science. The cross-platform compatibility of R and its capacity to handle large and complex data sets makes it an ideal tool for academicians to analyze data in their labs.

R can be used for simple calculations, matrix calculations, differential equations, optimization, statistical analysis, plotting graphs, etc. Also, it is useful for anybody who wishes to undertake extensive statistical computations and data visualization.

R allows you  to develop custom Artificial Intelligence Apps to deploy within your own organization. It has numerous packages  that are used in the field of ML.

The FOSSEE (Free/Libre and Open Source Software for Education) project at IIT Bombay (https://fossee.in) has been promoting Synfig Studio, and other FLOSS, such as Scilab, Python, OpenFOAM, eSim, Osdag, OpenModelica, R, Drupal and Linux, and open source hardware, such as Arduino and OpenPLC. The FOSSEE Project is funded by NMEICT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Methodology of the Workshop

Interested participants have to register online and pay the registration fee. The registration form will be available until 13 November 2020. The registered participants will receive an email with an R programming assignment, the description of assignment is given here. This assignment should be completed using R/ RStudio. Participants will have to complete the assigned R task within 6 days of receiving the email. Those who are not familiar with R/ R Studio can refer to the  spoken tutorials available here: Search Tutorials | spoken-tutorial.org, to learn the basics of  R Programming language.

The submitted task will then be reviewed by the R expert team. If the submitted task is approved, the participants will be allowed to attend the “R Advanced” workshop. If the submitted task is not approved, registration of the participant will be automatically transferred to the “R Beginner” workshop. No separate fee will be charged for the participants who are moved from the R Advanced to the R Beginner workshop. The decision of the FOSSEE team about the approval/rejection of the task is final. No request for refund of fee will be entertained, in case any participant doesn’t qualify to attend the R Advanced workshop. Final list of participants who are selected for the R Advanced workshop will be announced on 20 November 2020.

The “R Advanced” workshop will involve practising advanced topics related to machine learning using R, supported by live online lectures, demonstrations, and problem solving.

Course content

There will be two parts to this workshop:

    • Self-learning of R through Spoken Tutorials, completing the screening task, and getting qualified.
    • Attending an interaction session, during which, the following activities will be completed. Learning following concepts of machine learning using study material in R.
      • Linear Discriminant Analysis
      • Decision Tree
      • Hierarchical Clustering
      • K Means Clustering
      • Random Forest

The above will be supported by live sessions, demonstrations, and problem solving.

One has to successfully complete both of the above activities to be eligible for the Certificate.
