IT630 - Principles and Practice of Distributed Computing Offered by: Umesh BellurMode: Credit (6) Grade: BB Project: * A Monitor for Distributed Systems [Report (pdf/260K)] {Java}, Presentation (pdf/69K) ] Termpaper: * Epidemic Algorithms in Distributed Computing [Report (pdf/136K)] Notes: Excellent course, primarily focussing on Distributed Algorithms rather than on Systems. The regular stream of quizzes, termpaper and project made us work. The exams were a little tough, but very interesting to give. Very enjoyable overall. Back to Index IT680 - System Lab Offered by: Bernard Menezes, Paul ClementsMode: Credit (6) Grade: AA Notes: A course that I found wasteful. The goals were nominally related to building a software product, but they dissipated in a poorly run effort that didn't appeal to me at all. For the record, we built a product for Software Architects, but I'm inclined to view the effort as a waste of 6 credits. Back to Index CS610 - Web Mining and Search Offered by: Soumen ChakrabartiMode: Credit (6) Grade: BB Assignments on: Notes: Terrific course on the world of Web Search and Mining. Now, the course was tough but not as bad as its near-mythic legends would hav you believe. I struggled with the probabilistic part of it as usual and the "heaviness", but I am glad I took the course - my one big venture into uncharted waters. Soumen's course lectures can be divided into 3 parts: the 1st 30 minutes spent in recapitulating the previous contents and context are lucid, while the next two parts, we would forge ahead and I would find myself exponentially at a loss. Still, there was a lot to experience in this course. Back to Index HSS700 - Applied Economics Offered by: K.N.NarayananMode: Credit (6) Grade: AA Assignments on: Notes: Decent macro introduction to the world of Economics, something I'd wanted to study for a long time. Found the examples and exercises useful, though slightly old-worldly. Took a few things away from the course, so benefit overall. Back to Index IT694 - Seminar on "Lexical Knowledge Bases" Advisor: Prof. Pushpak BhattacharyyaMode: Credit (4) Grade: AA Documents: Seminar Report, Seminar Presentation I studied different lexical knowledge bases such as Wordnet, ConceptNet, HowNet et al, with a view to comparing their properties. Back to Index IT696 - M.Tech. Project - Stage 1 Advisor: Prof. Pushpak BhattacharyyaMode: Credit (12) Grade: AA Documents: Stage 1 Report, Stage 1 Presentation Abstract:We build approaches towards evaluating lexico-semantic networks by studying evaluation strategies applied to ontologies. The Stage 1 work showed the lack of such methods for networks such as WordNet, and so builds a case for such evaluations. A brief introduction to lexico-semantic networks, a mention of the principles of evaluation and the successes in Machine Translation evaluation were also studied. Back to Index |
