Introduction

The international participants are requested to read the instructions and payment guidelines before filling the Google form for Jmol workshop registration

Jmol Application  is a free and open source software developed in Java to view, create, and edit three-dimensional models of chemical structures, macromolecules (Crystal structures, Proteins, and Nucleic acids).  It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux Operating Systems. It is useful for classroom teaching  and presentations. Useful for students, educators, and researchers in chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacy.

Methodology of the Workshop

The interested participants have to register online and pay the registration fee. The registration form will be available until 7 September 2020. The registered participants will receive a mail consisting of one of the screening task assignments listed here to solve using Jmol Application. Participants will have to solve the assignment allotted by us and submit it, on or before 9 September 2020, 2.00 PM. The submitted assignment will then be reviewed by the Jmol Application expert team. If the submitted assignment is approved, the participants will be allowed to attend the “Jmol Application-Advanced” workshop. If the submitted assignment is not approved, those participants will be automatically registered to the “Jmol Application-Beginner” workshop. No separate fee will be charged for the participants who are moved from Jmol Application-Advanced to the Jmol Application-Beginner workshop. The decision of the FOSSEE team about the approval/rejection of the assignment is final. No request for refund of fee will be entertained, in case any participant doesn’t qualify to attend the Jmol Application-Advanced workshop. Final list of participants who are selected for Jmol Application-Advanced will be announced on 10 September 2020.

The “Jmol Application-Advanced” workshop will cover 4-hours of live/recorded online lectures on some advanced chemistry/biochemistry topics, demonstration of some selected features on the Jmol Application interface and watching advanced spoken tutorials on Jmol Application. Additionally, there will be a presentation/discussion session on the 3D models which the participants would have created to qualify for attending the advanced workshop.

Course content

The Jmol Application-Advanced workshop will have two parts (A & B).

A. About 4 hours of learning the below listed advanced topics on Jmol Application using a mix of live/recorded lectures, demonstration and pre-recorded spoken tutorials.

  1.  Importance of three-dimensional visualization of molecules
  2.  Stereochemistry and Chirality
  3.  Symmetry and Isomerism
  4.  3D structures of Proteins, Enzymes, Nucleotides and Crystal structures
  5.  Create Animations in Jmol and generate a GIF file
  6.  How to incorporate Jmol views in PPT slides

B. About 2 hours of discussion/presentation session on the 3D models created by the participants to qualify for attending the “Jmol Application-Advanced” workshop.
