Learner-Centric MOOC: From Conceptualizing to Conducting

Introduction

Arrival of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) has revolutionized the higher education landscape. MOOCs provide learners with the access to high-quality learning content along with the flexibility of pacing their learning. The Indian government has also identified the possibilities that MOOCs offer to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz. Access, Equity and Equality, and have initiated efforts to promote MOOCs through the SWAYAM platform as well as the encouraging transfer of MOOC credits in regular university education.

However, instructional designs for MOOCs bring in the additional challenges of scale, diversity, engagement and completion that adversely affect the MOOC learning experience. The concept of learner-centric MOOCs is catered to address these instructional design challenges. Emerging from the from a decade long experience of IIT Bombay in research, development and implementation of online courses (Hybrid Online and Massive Open Online), the philosophy and principles of learner-centric MOOCs are aimed at equipping teachers from colleges across the country to either create their own MOOC and offer them in platforms like SWAYAM or integrate existing MOOCs (like the Hybrid MOOCs offered through IITBombayX) in their own courses.
