Introduction

This is a T10KT workshop from IIT Bombay for teachers participating in the Blended MOOCs offering, as per the decision taken in the conclave held at IIT Bombay on 6 June, 2015.
All teachers participating in this T10KT workshop will have to submit their assignments in workshop Moodle and / or on IITBombayX platform, as stipulated.

About the course:

Details of coverage will be discussed and finalized in the first face-to-face meeting scheduled on 9 July 2015.The participating faculty should peruse the content of the archived MOOC made available now, under this workshop on IITBombayX.
It will provide face-to-face discussion sessions (1 hour/week), and enable participating in interactive Q & A sessions for students (1 hour/week) with IIT faculty, using A-View.

You are requested to complete the one-time-registration first, for this workshop on the NMEICT site - www.it.iitb.ac.in/nmeict

Course content

The following topics will be taught to students in the MOOC (ME209x). Teachers participating in this STTP are expected to know them well.All the assignments will be related to effective teaching of these topics.

  • Basic concepts/definitions, Thermodynamic state space
  • Thermodynamic definition of the work interaction and evaluation of work
  • The first law, energy and the heat interaction
  • The zeroth law, temperature and scales of temperature
  • Properties of gases and liquids, equations of state
  • Introduction to fluids, phase diagram of water, steam tables, Mollier chart
  • The second law, thermodynamic temperature scales and entropy. (Will involve different forms of the second law, Carnot Theorem, Carnot cycle, Clausius inequality, reversible processes, entropy generation etc.)
  • Relations between properties, basic property relations, Maxwell’s relations
  • Open thermodynamic systems
