Introduction

OpenFOAM workshop registration instructions for foreign participants. Register here

OpenFOAM (Open Source Field Operation and Manipulation) is an open source CFD software package developed by the OpenFOAM team at ESI and distributed by the OpenFOAM Foundation. OpenFOAM is a CFD toolbox, written in C++ and these C++ libraries are used to create executables, known as applications. The OpenFOAM distribution contains numerous solvers and utilities covering a wide range of CFD problems.

The FOSSEE (Free/Libre and Open Source Software for Education) project at IIT Bombay (https://fossee.in) has been promoting OpenFOAM, and other FLOSS, such as ChemCollective Virtual Lab, Biopython, Avogadro, UCSF Chimera, CellDesigner, Jmol Application, Scilab, Python, eSim, Osdag, OpenModelica, R, Drupal and Linux, and open source hardware, such as Arduino and OpenPLC. The FOSSEE Project is funded by NMEICT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Methodology of the Workshop

The workshop will be for 2 days, around 6 hrs of lectures/hands-on sessions on each day. An additional installation help session will be conducted a day before the workshop, which will also include a session introducing the participants to the basic Linux commands. The workshop will be conducted using a mix of pre-recorded spoken tutorial videos with side-by-side learning and live lectures/demonstrations. Practice problems/assignments will also be provided after every topic followed by discussions on them to get a good understanding of each topic.

All participants will get the OpenFOAM software installation support prior to the workshop, Spoken Tutorials on OpenFOAM software, video recording of all lectures and several solved problems. Using these, all those who are interested in conducting OpenFOAM workshops by themselves, can do so.  They will also get an opportunity to contribute towards the collaborative content creation activity of the FOSSEE Project.

Benefits of the Workshop

  • Installation help from FOSSEE, IIT Bombay Team.
  • In-depth understanding of basic spoken tutorials on OpenFOAM.
  • Q/A session with faculty members of IIT Bombay.
  • e-Certificate for attending the 2-day OpenFOAM workshop.

Course content

The training will help learners in using the OpenFOAM software to simulate basic CFD problems.

  1. Setting up a case in OpenFOAM
  2. Creating 2D and 3D geometry and mesh in OpenFOAM
  3. Simulating Hagen-Poiseuille flow through a pipe using OpenFOAM
  4. Basic post-processing using ParaView
  5. Turbulence modelling in OpenFOAM
  6. Heat transfer in OpenFOAM

In addition to the above, participants will get exposure to discuss/ask questions to the faculty members of IIT, Bombay.

Teaching Faculty

  • Prof. Janani S Murallidharan, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay
  • Prof. Manaswita Bose, Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay
  • FOSSEE and Spoken Tutorial Teams, IIT Bombay

Who Should Attend

This workshop will be useful to students, faculty, and working professionals from mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and allied fields who have knowledge of basic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) concepts.

Duration and Venue

The 2-day workshop on OpenFOAM will be conducted on 13 November and 14 November 2021. Each day will have an online interactive/ hands-on session from 10 am to 5 pm.
