Information Retrieval in Resource Constrained Environments

Abstract


With the explosive growth and spread of internet, web access from mobile and rural users has become significant. But, these users face problems of low bandwidth and intermittent internet connectivity. Considering such resource constrained environments, we propose, a 4-tier collaborative framework for accelerating dynamic data dissemination. Our model not only exploit techniques like scheduling, caching, profiling, novelty detection, pre-fetching, personalization, etc but also harness the potential power of distributed computation, storage and sensory resources by collaboration. We propose an algorithm which decides the tier from which an object must be downloaded in our framework maximizing the fidelity of the system. For limited, unreliable and semi-planned connectivity, we suggest and compare different ways to keep local cache coherent with source repositories. Also we design a solution for caching delay tolerant dynamic websites and implement it for aAQUA.org, an online portal for disseminating information from and to rural communities, proving its viability.
