The Compute Servers !


  • Server 1: marvin.it.iitb.ac.in
  • Server 2: eddie.it.iitb.ac.in
  • Login: Use your LDAP login.
  • Facilities: java, gcc, shfsmount(on marvin), sshfs(on eddie), Matlab.
  • User Account Available : MTech Students, RS students, Faculty


All accounts are available but initially disabled by default. If you want to use these compute servers, you have to send a request to sysads[at]it.iitb.ac.in, after which your account will be enabled for the next 6 months.

A single large space is available for all the users and if require can be extended upto a certain extent. If your data files are very large, you need not copy them onto this server rather proceed as follows:

Suppose your data files are at akash.it.iitb.ac.in and you want to run a program on marvin that requires the data files on akash. You can mount your home folder of akash on marvin by command shfsmount user@akash.it.iitb.ac.in: <Target Dir> and later you can unmount it by using shfsumount <Same Target Dir>. Here target directory is any empty directory inside your home folder on marvin.

If you want to run a program on eddie that requires files from some other machine, say akash. You can mount your home folder of akash on eddie using the command sshfs user@akash.it.iitb.ac.in: <Target Dir> and later you can unmount it by using fusermount -u <Same Target Dir>. Here again, the target directory is any empty directory inside your home folder on eddie.

Note that these compute servers do not have the facility of being backed up onto any other storage, so always copy all your important results from these servers on a regular basis.

As such there is no quota limit on users, you are requested to restrict your disk usage within a reasonable limit. In case of a space crunch, users will have to free up space through mutual understanding.
