Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM on 19 September 2020

Introduction

The international participants are requested to read the instructions and payment guidelines before filling the Google form for OpenFOAM workshop registration

OpenFOAM (Open Source Field Operation and Manipulation) is an open-source CFD software package developed by the OpenFOAM team at ESI and distributed by the OpenFOAM Foundation. OpenFOAM is a CFD toolbox, written in C++ and these C++ libraries are used to create executables, known as applications. The OpenFOAM distribution contains numerous solvers and utilities covering a wide range of CFD problems.

The FOSSEE project at IIT Bombay (https://fossee.in) has been promoting OpenFOAM, and other FLOSS, such as Scilab, Python, DWSIM, eSim, Osdag, OpenModelica, R, Drupal and Linux, and open-source hardware, such as Arduino and OpenPLC. FOSSEE is also funded by NMEICT, MHRD.

Methodology of the Workshop

The interested participants have to register online and pay the registration fee. The registration form will be available until 10th September 2020. The registered participants will receive an email on or before 11 September 2020 consisting of a CFD problem to be simulated using OpenFOAM within 5 days. The difficulty of the problem will be along the lines of the one given in this link. Participants will have to solve the problems allotted by us and submit it to us. The submitted simulations will then be reviewed by the OpenFOAM expert team. If the submitted simulations are approved, the participants will be allowed to attend the “Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM”. If the submitted simulations are not approved, those participants will be automatically registered to the “OpenFOAM-Beginner” workshop. No separate fee will be charged for the participants who are moved from Advanced workshop to the OpenFOAM-Beginner workshop. The decision of the FOSSEE team about the approval/rejection of the submitted simulations is final. No request for refund of fee will be entertained, in case any participant doesn’t qualify to attend the Advanced workshop. Final list of participants who are selected for the Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM will be announced on 17th September 2020.

The “Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM” will be a 6-hour session of lectures on the theory of multiphase flow simulations as well as demonstrations of an advanced multiphase flow simulation in OpenFOAM. Additionally, there will be a session to discuss the problems which the participants would have simulated to qualify for attending the advanced workshop.

Course content

The Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM will include

1. Lecture on multiphase flow simulation
2. Implementation of multiphase flow in OpenFOAM
3. Demonstration of a multiphase flow problem solved using volume of fluid (VOF) method
4. Demonstration of a multiphase flow problem solved using Eulerian method
5. Discussion on the CFD problems which the participants would have simulated to qualify for advanced workshop.
6. Faculty interaction and Q&A session with the FOSSEE-CFD Team.

Who Should Attend

This Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM will be useful to students, faculty, and working professionals from mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and allied fields who have a working knowledge of OpenFOAM and are well aware of the OpenFOAM Spoken Tutorials available under the basic level.

Please note that the participation in the OpenFOAM-Advanced workshop is subject to the approval/disapproval of the submitted simulation as mentioned under the “Methodology of the Workshop” section.

Duration and Venue

The Advanced workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM will be conducted online on Saturday, 19 September 2020 from 10 A.M to 5 P.M

Criteria for Certification

Participation certificates will be provided to all participants after successful completion of the workshop, in an electronic form.

Participants who attend the workshop will be given an option to act as a TA (Teaching Assistant) for the OpenFOAM-Beginner workshop to be conducted on 26th September 2020. All such participants will be given a TA certificate. Details about the responsibilities of a Teaching Assistant will be informed later

If the submitted simulations are not approved, those participants will be automatically registered to the “OpenFOAM-Beginner” workshop. No separate fee will be charged for the participants who are moved to the OpenFOAM-Beginner workshop. The decision of the FOSSEE team about the approval/rejection of the simulations is final. No request for refund of fee will be entertained, in case any participant doesn’t qualify to attend the Advanced workshop.

Note

• As the workshop is conducted online, it is mandatory to have a laptop and a working internet connection with good bandwidth.
• The problems to be simulated using OpenFOAM will be assigned by us.
• Simulations submitted to us will be reviewed by OpenFOAM experts at FOSSEE.
• The decision of approval/rejection of simulations by the FOSSEE team will be final.

Technical Requirements:

• It is mandatory to have OpenFOAM 6 or newer version installed in the system to attend the workshop. The installation tutorial for OpenFOAM 7 on Ubuntu OS is available here.
• Following operating systems can be used for installing OpenFOAM:
  • Windows: 32/64-bit Vista/7/8/10 (Requires Ubuntu installed via VirtualBox; installation sheet available here).
  • Linux: 64-bit x86 Ubuntu 16.04 or above; or 64-bit distributions of Linux including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) v7+, CentOS v7+, Fedora v22+, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) v12+, openSuSE v13+ and Debian 8+.
  • macOS: 10.3.3 or newer.
