Introduction

The One-Day GIS workshop is aimed at creating awareness about the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and its applications using open-source data, for faculty members from colleges across India. The objective is to impart geospatial map-creating skills using open-source mapping tools like QGIS. This workshop also aims to orient the faculty in guiding students in forming teams to participate in activities such as ‘IIT Bombay-FOSSEE-Mapathon’, ‘GIS Case Study’, ‘GIS Internship’, ‘GIS Summer School’, etc.

QGIS is a free and open-source cross-platform, desktop geographic information system (GIS) application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data. In addition to composing and exporting graphical maps, it also supports both raster and vector layers; vector data is stored as point, line, or polygon features.

This workshop is organized jointly by the FOSSEE Project, and the Rural Data Research and Analysis Lab.
