Introduction

Scilab is an open-source numerical computation software that offers a facility to create a Graphical User Interface (GUI). While learning to create a GUI we will explore one useful tool during this workshop which is the GUI Builder Toolbox.

The GUI Builder Toolbox in Scilab is a powerful tool for creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs) quickly and easily. The toolbox provides a collection of graphical components, such as buttons, sliders, text boxes, and plots, that can be assembled together to create customized user interfaces. The use of a GUI Builder Toolbox in Scilab can save users a lot of time and effort, as it simplifies the process of creating GUIs and eliminates the need for writing complex code from scratch. With the GUI Builder Toolbox, users can create user-friendly interfaces for their Scilab applications, making them more accessible to users who may not be familiar with the command-line interface of Scilab.

During the workshop, we will cover how to use various GUI components and by the end of it, participants will have a good understanding of how to create basic GUIs in Scilab and how to use them for various applications.

The FOSSEE project at IIT Bombay (https://fossee.in) has been promoting Scilab, and other FLOSS, such as Python, OpenFOAM, eSim, Osdag, OpenModelica, DWSIM, R, Drupal and Linux, and open source hardware, such as Arduino and OpenPLC. FOSSEE is also funded by NMEICT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Methodology of the Workshop

The workshop will be conducted using pre-recorded spoken tutorial videos with side by side learning. For a comprehensive understanding of each topic, practice problems will be provided following each tutorial.

All participants will receive the Spoken Tutorials on Scilab GUI, along with the slides and the code files used in the tutorial.

Benefits of the Workshop

On successful completion of the workshop, participants will

  • Learn to build an interactive GUI
  • Get certificate for attending 1 day Scilab GUI Workshop

Course content

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to create a GUI using GUI Builder Toolbox.
  • Create and customize different GUI components such as pushbuttons, radiobuttons, checkboxes, sliders, and plots.
  • Learn how to link these components to data and functions.
  • Design interactive user interfaces that are easy to use and navigate.
  • Visualize and analyze data in a more user-friendly way.
