Introduction

QGIS (previously known as Quantum GIS, https://qgis.org) is a free and open source cross platform, desktop geographic information system (GIS) application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data. In addition to composing and exporting graphical maps, it also supports both raster and vector layers; vector data is stored as point, line, or polygon features.

This workshop is organised by the GISE Hub, IIT Bombay in association with the FOSSEE and the Spoken Tutorial Projects. GISE Hub is a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The FOSSEE Project is funded by NMEICT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Methodology of the Workshop

The interested participants have to register online and pay the registration fee. The registration form will be available till 23 May 2022, 12 Noon.

This workshop will be for 6 hours per day, comprising of online lectures, watching relevant pre-recorded Spoken Tutorial videos with side-by-side learning, hands-on training, and interaction with experts. There will be course instructors to help you out in case you have any difficulties.

Course content

  • The following topics will be taught to the participants who are attending the GIS workshop.

    1. Introduction to GIS: Basics and Data types of GIS
    2. Understanding the need for river mapping and analysis 
    3. Downloading GIS Datasets for river mapping
    4. Downloading administrative boundaries
    5. Visualising and Creating a buffer for rivers
    6. Creating a drainage network and rivers from Digital Elevation Models
    7. Creating a map

Who Should Attend

This workshop will be useful to all students, faculty, and working professionals from any field interested i n creating river maps using open source GIS software.

Participation certificates will be provided to all participants after successful completion of the workshop, in an electronic form.

Duration and Venue

The workshop will be conducted online from 26 - 28 May 2022, from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Criteria for Certification

Participation certificates, in an electronic form, will be provided to all participants after successful completion of the workshop.

Course Fee

The course fee will be 200 per person inclusive of GST.

Please note that the registration fee once paid is neither refundable nor adjustable under any circumstances.

Note

  • As the workshop is conducted online, it is mandatory to have a laptop/ desktop and a working Internet connection with good bandwidth.

Technical Requirements:

  • It is mandatory to have QGIS Version 2.18 (or higher most stable version) installed in the computer system to attend the workshop.
  • Following operating systems can be used for installing QGIS:
    • Windows: 32/64-bit Vista/7/8/10
    • Linux: 64-bit x86 Ubuntu 12.04 or newer / 32-bit armhf Raspbian/Ubuntu MATE
    • macOS: 10.7 (OS X Lion) or newer
