Introduction

Freeplane is a mind mapping or concept mapping software with a simple and user friendly GUI. It is a free and open source software. It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux Operating Systems. Concept mapping was developed to visually represent concepts in teaching and learning. It is useful for students, educators, and researchers across all fields. It is a useful tool for classroom teaching and learning, and presentations.

The FOSSEE (Free/Libre and Open Source Software for Education) project at IIT Bombay (https://fossee.in) has been promoting Freeplane, and other FLOSS, such as ChemCollective Virtual Lab, gnuplot, Blender, OpenFOAM, Scilab, Python, R, and Linux, and open source hardware, such as OpenPLC. The FOSSEE Project is funded by NMEICT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Methodology of the Workshop

The pilot workshop will be for 4 hours, with a short lecture and hands-on session. The workshop will be conducted using a mix of pre-recorded spoken tutorial videos with side by side learning and live lectures. Each tutorial has practice problems/assignments to get a good understanding of each topic.

All participants will get the Spoken Tutorials on Freeplane.

Course content

The training will help teachers in using the Freeplane software to create concept maps for teaching and learning purposes. Teachers will be able to convey their class notes to a map and vice versa.

The following topics will be covered during the workshop.

  • Download and open Freeplane
  • Add nodes, sibling nodes and construct a map
  • Format the map and nodes styles
  • Add floating concepts and connect them
  • Add learning resources to a map
  • Add attributes
  • Convert your notes to map and convert a map to text

We will give an overview of advanced topics, such as creating conditional nodes and incorporating Groovy scripting.

Duration and Venue

Pilot Workshop on Freeplane will be conducted online on 5th June 2021 from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. It will consist of a short lecture/demonstration followed by an interactive hands-on session for 3 hours.

Criteria for Certification

Participation certificates, in an electronic form, will be provided to all participants after successful completion of the workshop.

This Pilot workshop will be free of cost.

The registration form will be available until 03 June 2021

There will be NO remote centres in this workshop. During the online registration, one should opt for 'IIT Bombay' as a remote centre. In the registration page, 'Maharashtra' should be selected as the state and 'Indian institute of Technology Bombay' as the remote centre.


There are a limited number of seats available. Participants will be confirmed on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Note

  • As the workshop is conducted online, it is mandatory to have a desktop/ laptop with an external mouse and a working internet connection with good bandwidth. The computer must have speaker or able to connect to earphones to listen to the tutorial audio. The laptop should be capable of running Freeplane software.

Technical Requirements:

  • It is mandatory to have Freeplane Version 1.7 or higher installed in the system to attend the workshop. 
  • Freeplane requires Java 1.4 or higher. It is recommended, if possible, to install the latest Java version from Oracle. You can have it installed by visiting www.java.com and following instructions therein.
  • The installation sheet is available here.
  • Following operating systems are recommended.
    • Windows 10, 64-bit computers.
    • Linux machines, 16 or higher
    • MacOS X OS 10 or  higher
