Introduction

A new initiative is being taken by IIT Bombay to work with Engineering Colleges in the country to enhance the teaching skills of our faculty colleagues in core Engineering and Science Subjects.A theme paper outlining the details is available on the website of this program. Essentially, we propose to conduct workshops using the EDUSAT network of ISRO. The participating teachers will attend live lectures given by IIT faculty at a center close to their own college, and will attend tutorial and lab sessions conducted in the same centre. Each centre will have a course Coordinator, who will supervise the conduct of tutorials and Labs. All the participating teachers will later contribute collaboratively to the contents. The final edited audio-visual contents including recorded lectures, along with other course material created, will be released in open source. This can be freely used later by all teachers and students. A pilot 2-week workshop on "Effective teaching/learning of Computer Programming" will be conducted from 14th Dec, 2009 to 30th Dec, 2009 (likely to be approved as ISTE workshop) for which we seek support from ISRO centers. This course is taught in all engineering/MCA colleges in the country. An estimated 7,00,000 students study this subject every year, taught by about 7000 to 10000 teachers covering lectures, tutorials and labs, typically in the first year of all branches of engineering.

The present five-day workshop from 29th Sept, 2009 to 3rd Oct, 2009 is meant for those faculty colleagues who are willing to be prospective centre co-ordinators for the above project.

Course content

The five-day workshop is conducted to provide a complete orientation to the prospective centre coordinators on the methodology to be followed in this project. This will include the delivery of live lectures through EDUSAT, mechanism of interaction with participants and the local conduct of tutorials and labs. Since the final contents are meant to be adopted by most colleges across the country, this workshop will finalize the following:
(a) Definition of common syllabus to be covered.
(b) Graded coverage from simple to difficult levels for each topic and subtopic.
(c) Nature of tutorials and lab sessions, keeping the above gradation and the typical examination pattern in mind, but leading to the typical advanced levels reached in such subject teaching at the top institutions of the world.
(d) Discussion of laboratory environment and the experiments to be conducted.
(e) Use of the learning management system, audio-visual equipment, editing tools.
(f) Other logistic details for conducting the main workshop.

It is preferable that they have some experience in conduct of ISTE/QIP workshops.

It is mandatory that the participant¢s Institute is either an established ISRO EDUSAT centre, or is likely to become a functional centre before December 2009.

Duration and Venue
